Veterinary License Renewal & CE Requirements

Wyoming

Next Renewal Deadline: December 31, Annually

Wyoming veterinary licenses expire annually on December 31. License renewal is completed by registration with the board and payment of the annual registration renewal fee. The board typically mails a notice to each licensed veterinarian by December 1, along with a form for re-registration. While the license renews annually, the continuing education requirement operates on a biennial cycle. This means practitioners must track their CE over a two-year period, despite the yearly renewal obligation. This structure may require careful attention to ensure CE hours are accumulated and reported correctly within the designated biennial timeframe.

Proactive Advice

To ensure continuous licensure and avoid late fees, veterinarians should ensure their renewal application is post-marked by December 31. Given that processing times can extend up to four weeks for complete applications during busy periods, it is critical to submit all required documents well in advance.

The Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine experiences increased processing times during busy seasons, up to four weeks for complete applications. Submit your full renewal packet early to avoid delays and ensure your license remains active.

What Counts and What Doesn’t

Application Process & Requirements (Veterinarians)

  • License Types: The Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine offers various license types, including Veterinarian License (by examination or endorsement), Artificial Insemination Technician, Embryo Transfer Technician, Embryo Transplant Technician, and Animal Euthanasia Technician.

  • Educational Requirements: Applicants must be graduates of a college of veterinary medicine. Foreign graduates may need to complete certification through the ECFVG or PAVE.

  • Examinations:
    • North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE): Required. Scores must be forwarded directly from AAVSB-VIVA.
    • State Board Examination: This examination is mailed to applicants to take at their convenience and return to the Board office.
    • State Veterinary Jurisprudence Examination: Required for all veterinarian applicants.

  • Licensure by Endorsement: While Wyoming does not explicitly use the term "reciprocity," licensure by endorsement is possible for those licensed in good standing in another state. This process requires submitting evidence of graduation from an approved school and credentials substantially equivalent to Wyoming's requirements.

  • Required Documents: Written application, proof of being an adult, good moral character, physical and mental health, proof of AVMA-accredited graduation (or ECFVG/PAVE for foreign grads), NAVLE scores, and State Board examination results. A resume/work history, transcripts, and proof of citizenship/alien status are also requested.

  • Application Process Notes: The board warns of processing times up to four weeks for complete applications.Licenses may not be renewed after five years of expiration; a new application is required in such cases.

Accepted CE Formats & Topics

  • Required Hours: 24 credit hours every two years.

  • Specific Mandatory CE: 3 hours of continuing education related to the responsible prescribing of controlled substances are required every two years.

  • Accepted Formats: Credit hours are earned at a rate of one hour credit for each hour of attending Board-approved programs. All 24 hours may be completed online.

  • CE Topics: Programs must be specifically related to the practice of veterinary medicine. Practice management hours are capped and cannot exceed twenty-five percent (25%) of the total requirement.

  • Approved Organizations/Sponsors: Board-approved programs include, but are not limited to, those sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Animal Health Association (AAHA), Western States Veterinary Conference, veterinary college conferences, Wyoming Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA), and any other affiliated association or society. NVAP Training Modules for Accreditation are approved for 1 hour per module.

  • New Licensee Requirement: New licensees are required to attend a Board orientation within eighteen months of licensure. This orientation counts towards CE credits and failure to attend may result in disciplinary action. This unique requirement ensures new veterinarians are directly introduced to Wyoming's specific regulatory framework and expectations early in their licensure period, proactively preventing non-compliance due to lack of awareness.

  • Re-taking Courses: The veterinary rules do not prohibit re-taking courses, meaning they can be repeated in subsequent renewal cycles for CE credit.

CE Documentation

Licensees must maintain and provide proof of continuing education attendance on a form provided by the Board. This form must be submitted with the licensee's renewal application in the year for which it is due.
