Missouri veterinary licenses are valid for one year and are subject to annual renewal, with an expiration date of November 30. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board typically sends renewal forms by email to all currently licensed veterinarians around September 1 each year. For those without an email address on file, a paper application is mailed.

CE Requirements

Veterinarians:

10 hours of continuing education are required annually.
All 10 hours may be completed through online learning.
A maximum of 4 hours may be earned in non-scientific topics, such as practice management or communication skills.
A maximum of 2 hours can be obtained through self-study reading of approved scientific journals.
Licensees may carry over a maximum of 10 excess CE hours to the subsequent reporting period, though these hours cannot be carried over for more than one period.

Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs):

5 hours of continuing education are required annually.
At least 3 hours must be obtained through attendance at approved workshops or seminars, or via interactive materials on scientific subjects.
A maximum of 2 hours may be earned in non-scientific topics.
CE does not necessarily need to be RACE-approved, but it must be approved by the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board.
RVTs have the flexibility to accumulate the required 5 hours of continuing education over a period of up to two years.

For Busy Veterinarians

Accepted CE Formats & Topics (Veterinarians)

Required Hours: 10 hours annually.
Reporting Period: The continuing education reporting period runs from December 1 to November 30 of the following year.
Accepted Formats:
- Attendance or presentation at approved scientific workshops or seminars (50 minutes of attendance equals 1 CE hour; 25 minutes of presentation equals 1 CE hour, with no credit for subsequent presentations on the same subject within the same renewal period).
- Audio or video recordings, electronic, computer, or interactive materials/programs on scientific subjects, provided they are prepared or sponsored by approved organizations (written certification of completion is required).
- A maximum of two (2) hours of self-study reading approved scientific journals.
- A maximum of four (4) hours of attendance in an approved workshop or seminar on non-scientific subjects related to veterinary medicine (e.g., communication skills, medical record keeping, stress management, practice management).
- A maximum of four (4) hours of audio or video recordings, electronic, computer, or interactive materials or programs on non-scientific subjects, prepared or sponsored by approved organizations (written certification of completion required).
- Study within a graduate resident program at an American Veterinary Medical Association-approved veterinary school satisfies the annual CE requirements for the year of enrollment.
CE Topics:
- Scientific subjects directly related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of animal diseases.
- Non-scientific subjects relevant to the practice of veterinary medicine, such as communication skills, medical record keeping, stress management, or practice management (subject to the 4-hour maximum).

Approved Organizations/Sponsors: The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and its specialty groups, regional meetings (e.g., Central Veterinary Conference, Western Veterinary Conference), any state or province veterinary medical association, local or regional veterinary medical associations affiliated with a state association, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), AVMA-accredited veterinary schools that are open to all licensees, any state veterinary academy, the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) or its successor (Registry of Approved Continuing Education - RACE), the Missouri State Veterinarian, and any other programs receiving prior approval from the board.
Approved Scientific Journals: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, The Journal of Veterinary Research, Veterinary Medicine, publications of the American Veterinary Medical Association Approved Constituent Specialty Groups, Compendium of Continuing Education, Journal of American Animal Hospital Association, and other publications approved in advance by the board.
Carry-over Hours: A maximum of ten (10) excess continuing education hours, excluding self-study, may be carried over to the next reporting period. These hours cannot be carried over more than one reporting period.

Required Hours: 5 hours annually.
Reporting Period: The continuing education reporting period runs from December 1 to November 30 of the following year.
Accepted Formats:
- Attendance at an approved workshop or seminar (at least 3 hours of the annual 5-hour requirement).
- Audio or video recordings, electronic, computer, or interactive materials/programs on scientific subjects prepared or sponsored by the board or the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) or its successor—Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) (written certification of course completion required; also counts towards the minimum 3 hours).
- One (1) clock hour of consultation with another registered veterinary technician or licensed veterinarian (not the applicant’s supervisor), documented on the annual renewal registration application.
- One (1) clock hour of reading from a professional journal, documented on the annual renewal registration application.
- One (1) clock hour of audio or video recordings, electronic, computer or interactive materials or programs on non-scientific subjects related to veterinary medicine (e.g., communication skills, medical record keeping, stress management, practice management) (written certification of course completion required).
CE Topics: Scientific subjects directly related to the veterinary technician's role, and non-scientific subjects as listed above.
Approved Organizations/Sponsors: Similar to veterinarians, with the addition of state/province veterinary technician associations.

CE Documentation

Licensees are required to maintain full and complete records of all approved continuing education hours for the two (2) previous reporting periods, in addition to the current one. These records should include course titles, dates, locations, sponsors, hours earned, and certificates of attendance or completion. While Missouri does not verify CE annually, licensees should retain these records for at least two years as they may be subject to audit.
